VOLUNTEERS carried out a litter survey at Fisherrow Sands in Musselburgh to kick off this summer’s My Beach, Your Beach (MBYB) campaign. Led by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful, more than 1,200 items of rubbish were recorded on just 100m of the beach and promenade, including more than 600 cigarette butts, during the first week in May. This captured as snapshot of the local beach litter problem prior to the start of the summer season. Litter is a key indicator for the MBYB campaign, which encourages beach users to take better care of the sand and sea, supporting efforts to improve bathing water quality and, in turn, benefiting the local environment, community and businesses.
