Youth Spotlight: Jenifer Macias leads by example

Special to the Daily Lao Tzo proclaims that, “To lead people, walk behind them.” When reflecting on the significant impact that Battle Mountain High School junior Jenifer Macias is having on her peers, I recall her quiet but significant role modeling of community and youth engagement. Jenifer has sought out numerous opportunities for herself, from academic to service, in order to learn about various pathways, develop a network, and relish her high school experience. I first met Jenifer as a freshman when she was recruited through a friend and fellow classmate to support Mountain Youth with translation. This volunteer duty supported hours required for her Eagle County School District Seal of Biliteracy. This credential requires volunteerism in both English and Spanish.

Eagle County Schools: Prom and graduation to go on (almost) as normal

Screen grab Even with a recent influx of positive COVID-19 cases and quarantines, Eagle County Schools is optimistic and planning for (almost) normal prom and graduation ceremoneies for the areas’ high schools. This decision is aided in large part by the evolving state and county mandates. On Friday, Colorado’s coronavirus dial expires, leaving it up to local communities to decide what restrictions are right for them regarding Eagle County has said that it hopes to lift restrictions by May 27 one day before Eagle County starts hosting its graduations. According to Katie Jarnot, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at Eagle County Schools, the plans are beginning to come together for graduation. “The public health orders will allow us to have a pretty normal graduation and the capacity limits will be lifted in such a way that we will be able to allow anyone who wants to attend, to attend,” she said at Wednesday’s school board meeting.

A relentless school year for educators, students and parents

Special to the Daily Melisa Rewold-Thuon, assistant superintendent for Eagle County Schools, remembers spending her birthday at the emergency school board meeting. “It’s a birthday I will always remember,” she said of March 13, 2020. . It would close 17 schools and switch to remote learning for three weeks starting Tuesday, just three days later. The news that kids would be learning from home because of the rapidly-evolving pandemic, exactly one week after Eagle County’s first confirmed coronavirus infection, reverberated throughout the county’s households and businesses. “I was hoping for the best, but also worrying, what if we have a huge outbreak?” Rewold-Thuon said of the uncertain weeks leading up to the district’s announcement, when the shadow of the pandemic spread and darkened, but had not yet upended life. “I do remember thinking, ‘This is not going to be good, I have a feeling,’” Rewold-Thuon said.
