Local businesses, students prepare for prom weekend

COLUMBIA - Columbia Public Schools District will host in-person prom this year, with the first two this Saturday. Many local restaurants have spent the week preparing for an influx of reservations this weekend. Park Restaurant & Bar s co-general manager said it s been a month of preparation. Park Restaurant & Bar is completely booked for this weekend because of high school proms and Mizzou graduation celebrations. New special prosecutor will be appointed in Columbia officer s manslaughter case

(KMIZ) Attorneys agreed in a court hearing Friday morning that a new special prosecutor will be appointed in a Columbia police officer s manslaughter case. Andria Heese is accused of killing 4-year-old Gabriella Curry in early 2019 after her police cruiser hit the child on a sidewalk outside of Battle High School. The defense and prosecution decided the Missouri Office of Prosecution Services will pick the new special prosecutor and Boone County Circuit Judge Jeff Harris will have the final say in approval.

Black History Month: A special time at MU and Columbia schools

There are added activities and lessons for Black History Month in Columbia schools, but Black history and culture is a part of lessons all year, school officials say. Notable African Americans in history are sometimes emphasized in lessons during February, said Joy Bess, social studies coordinator for the school district. Sometimes kids, they can identify with people who come from run-of-the-mill backgrounds to go on to do something great, Bess said. Some students have built-in lessons in their buildings, Bess said. There s Muriel Battle High School, next to Eliot Battle Elementary School, educational leaders who worked for desegregation in schools. Beulah Ralph Elementary School was named for a Black educator and community leader. Frederick Douglass High School is named for the famous Black abolitionist. Lange Middle School is named for Black entrepreneur John B. Lange Sr.
