Officials said while officers were responding to the scene, the suspect, 57-year-old Shaun Simmons of Wells, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the victim, 71-year-old William Ness, also of Wells, was treated at the scene and transported by Wells Emergency Medical Services to the Sanford Regional airport where he was then taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital by LifeFlight. He is currently receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the chest.

WELLS, Maine  One man is suspected of shooting another in the chest Sunday afternoon before turning the gun on himself, police said. The Wells Police Department, with assistance from the Ogunquit Police Department, responded about 3:42 p.m. to 36 Appletree Lane in Wells for a report of a man who had been shot, according to a WPD announcement late Sunday. While officers were responding to the scene, the suspected shooter, 57-year-old Shaun Simmons of Wells died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the announcement. The victim, 71-year-old William Ness of Wells, was treated at the scene then transported by Wells Emergency Medical Services to the Sanford Regional airport, where he was transported by Lifeflight of Maine to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was receiving treatment Sunday night for the gunshot wound to the chest, according to the WPD announcement.
