SCIOTO A few days into February, it is apparent that Scioto County and Ohio is at a different and mostly better place in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
According to data from the Portsmouth City and county health departments, more people recovered from COVID in January than new positive cases. This was due to smaller increases in case numbers, while presumed recoveries remained between 40 to 65 each day.

SCIOTO- Staff members in Scioto County schools will have to wait toward mid-February to receive the COVID vaccine, according to a schedule released from the Ohio Department of Health.
The ODH Friday release detailed when all Ohio K-12 schools can expect the arrival of the vaccine, where Gov. Mike DeWine’s goal is to have all schools in either a hybrid or full-time in-person learning model by March 1.
Smooth rollout for first week of Scioto County vaccines

PORTSMOUTH According to the Scioto EMA Joint Information Center, approximately 814 people in Scioto County including health care personnel, EMS, and public health vaccination staff have received their first doses of the Moderna vaccine for COVID-19 in the county’s first week of vaccinating. Christine Thomas, Portsmouth City Health Department’s Director of Nursing was the first in the county to receive the vaccine.
Another shipment of Moderna doses is expected to arrive at local health departments, hospitals, and other Ohio Department of Health-approved facilities this week. Scioto County vaccination sites will continue to provide the vaccine to front line health care workers, then offer the vaccination to staff and then the residents of long-term care facilities and home health care providers once more doses are available. The Moderna vaccine requires a second dose 28 days after the first.
First round of vaccines coming to Scioto County

SCIOTO Scioto County is expected to receive its first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines as early as Monday Dec. 21. Local health, education, and emergency management agencies are ready to activate coordinated vaccination plans that follow Ohio Department of Health guidelines.
The first supply of vaccines will be limited to frontline medical and public health workers and emergency medical responders.
“We need to first protect those who are providing frontline care for our growing number of positive cases,” said Dr. Jerod Walker, Scioto County Health Commissioner. “Vaccines are on the way and will be administered as quickly as possible.”
