BOISE, Idaho School districts across the Treasure Valley have decided to make masks optional as many gear up for the new school year to begin in less than one month.
The Boise, Kuna, West Ada, Caldwell and Nampa school districts all decided to lift their mask mandates following the CDC recommendation on July 9, which said unvaccinated staff and students should wear masks in a school setting.

Jul. 19 The share of Idaho students meeting both the reading and math benchmarks on the SAT dropped this year compared to 2019, according to data released by the State Department of Education.
Of the 19,713 high school juniors who took the college entrance exam in the spring of 2021, 29.1% met both the math and evidence-based reading and writing benchmarks, a drop of about 1.7 percentage points from 2019.
For the reading and writing section, 53.2% met the benchmark, a drop of 3 percentage points from 2019. Only 31.2% met the math benchmark, a decrease of 1.3 percentage points from 2019.

K-12 public schools across Idaho won t be requiring the vaccine for students yet, according to current immunization requirements from the state. School districts across the state also don t appear to have plans to implement vaccine mandates for teachers and staff, said Quinn Perry, policy and government affairs director for the Idaho School Boards Association.

Boise schools now join Caldwell, Nampa, Kuna, and the West Ada School District to no longer mandate masks for the upcoming year.
It has some parents like Cristi Cota concerned. Her family has firsthand experience with COVID-19 as her husband is a nurse.
