Chicago to review 41 statues in light of BLM protests

Chicago is reviewing 41 monuments including statues of Abraham Lincoln, Columbus, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin as it decides whether they should be replaced because of ties to slavery and oppression The Chicago Monuments Project has identified 41 monuments in the city that will undergo a review on whether they should be removed They include five statues of President Abraham Lincoln It comes despite the Illinois motto reading Land of Lincoln Can we not cancel Lincoln in Chicago? one resident asked  George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Christopher Columbus are among the other historical figures under review A city commision identified the statues from 500 around the city after the project began in the summer and the public are now being asked for comment

Bonnie “Jean” Rodenbeck, 98, died Dec. 2, 2020. She was born Jan. 23, 1922 in Topeka, Kansas, and was adopted by Henry and Fern Wilson of Colby, Kansas at the age of five. She traveled by train to Colby by herself to meet her new family for the first time. She graduated from Colby High School in 1939 with Francis Rodenbeck, who enlisted in the Army Air Corps before Pearl Harbor. She visited him with his parents and his brother before he was deployed overseas for 2½ years.  He asked for her hand in marriage and the couple were married Dec. 22, 1941 in front of the Methodist pastor’s Christmas tree at the parsonage.

Landmarks Illinois seeks nominations for 2021 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois

Share: CHICAGO, Dec. 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/  Landmarks Illinois, a statewide historic preservation advocacy nonprofit organization, is now accepting nominations for its 2021 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois. The annual Most Endangered list is Landmarks Illinois longest-running advocacy program and calls attention to historic and culturally significant sites throughout the state that are threatened with deterioration, demolition or inappropriate development. Community organizations, neighborhood groups, preservation advocates and residents of Illinois are encouraged to submit a nomination by January 22, 2021. Historic properties nominated to the 2021 Most Endangered list are not required to be locally or nationally designated landmarks. They may be places largely unknown to the general public but are valued by local residents and celebrate the history, traditions and culture of the community.

Anderson Occupation: Architect, owner of Studio GWA About the nominee: Architect and historic preservationist Gary Anderson has played a key role in the resurgence of downtown Rockford, culminating with the redevelopment of the dilapidated former Amerock factory into the four-star Hilton Embassy Suites and Lawrence J. Morrissey Conference Center. If not for Anderson and the Friends of Ziock a group of preservationists and residents he helped to form  it  might have been demolished years ago.
