Our Bucks County Commissioners met recently to discuss preparation for the upcoming election. Unfortunately, the commissioners plan won’t ensure citizens can cast ballots easily; 48% of voters voted by mail in November. Already,10% of registered Republicans and Democrats the most likely primary voters have requested mail-in-ballots for May. If turnout holds at approximately 15% in this off-year primary, more than 60% of voters that will vote will do so by mail.
Our postal service will need to handle 90,000 pieces of additional mail between late April and May 18, the return deadline. Given concerns about the reliability and timeliness of the mail, many voters will choose to put their ballots in a drop box to meet the deadline.
