An 18-foot, high-frequency radar station will soon be placed in the dune between the two public parking lots on Lewes Beach.
Mayor and city council unanimously approved a request from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System, a group affiliated with the University of Delaware.
The new unit is expected to be installed by May, when it will become part of an integrated ocean observing system that’s used by 11 regional associations and 17 federal agencies, including NASA, NOAA, Coast Guard, Navy, Department of Transportation and others.

Councilman Rob Morgan and newcomer Carolyn Jones have each filed to run in the 2021 Lewes municipal election in May.
Morgan is seeking his fourth term on council, while Jones looks to fill the seat vacated by Deputy Mayor Bonnie Osler, who announced earlier this year she would not seek re-election.
The election is set for Saturday, May 8.

Jones, 79, moved to Lewes in 2008 after spending some time in Dewey Beach and Ocean View. She retired to Delaware following a long career in the Washington, D.C. area.

The window for candidates to file for the 2021 Lewes municipal election opens Monday, March 1.
They’ll have until Thursday, April 1, to submit paperwork to run in the Saturday, May 8 election. The seats of Deputy Mayor Bonnie Osler and Councilman Rob Morgan are up for election this year. Earlier this year, Osler announced she would not seek another term.
Each seat carries a three-year term.
To be an eligible candidate, a person must be at least 21 years old, a full-time Lewes resident for at least one year and shall not have been convicted of a felony.
Don’t expect to see a parking permit system on Lewes Beach this summer, as mayor and city council determined there is still a lot of work to do before making a decision. At their Feb. 11 meeting, city officials tasked city hall staff with further.
