SOUTH BENDÂ â Dozens of multicolored umbrellas filled the airspace at Studebaker Plaza, protecting benches, balloons and a life-size chess board from the potential precipitation of the cloudy April sky.
The colorful umbrellas instantly drew the eye of Notre Dame junior Alex DeMeritt who was driving through downtown South Bend on Friday afternoon.
âOh my God, this looks so cool,â DeMeritt exclaimed as she made her friend pull over so she could jump out and take pictures.
The array is part of the Hit Refresh campaign, an initiative put on by the cityâs Venues, Parks and Arts Department and Downtown South Bend Inc. to provide downtown visitors a chance to enjoy the spring weather and refresh from a year of COVID.

Potawatomi Zoo announces campaign to build giraffe habitat By: Matt Nagy Courtesy of Potawatomi Zoo: Giraffe Architechtural Perspective
SOUTH BEND, Ind. The Potawatomi Zoo announced that it is undergoing a fundraising campaign to build a new giraffe habitat and feeding experience.
The zoo is committing to raise $4.8 million for the new Giraffe Feeding Adventure.
This outdoor Giraffe Feeding Adventure and habitat will cover 2.5 acres located at the middle of the zoo
The mixed herd of giraffes will be cohabitating with other species like zebra and ostriches.
A 10,000 square foot giraffe barn will allow visitors to see and feed giraffes in inclement weather.
Even with a mix of snow and mud covering the 2.5-acre construction site at the Potawatomi Zoo, Josh Sisk is able to paint a colorful picture of what a new giraffe exhibit will look like when it opens early in the fall.
There will be areas where visitors can hand-feed Romaine lettuce to the gentle giants, look them eye-to-eye or watch them interact with each other and other animals in the exhibit â appropriately called the Giraffe Feeding Adventure.
A 10,000-square-foot barn also is being built to house the giraffes, which can grow as tall as 18 feet, as well as zebras and ostriches that will share the space.
