A passenger was seriously injured in a crash last weekend that also killed the carâs young driver, according to state police.
Kiersten Atkinson, 19, has undergone multiple surgeries since being rushed to the hospital and is listed in critical condition, said her mother, Catrina Hill.

âWeâre still not out of the woods yet,â Hill said. âItâs going to be a long road.â
Hill, of Elliston, said sheâs felt helpless as sheâs kept a worried watch over her only daughterâs bedside at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
âI feel like the most useless person in the world,â she said shakily. âIt feels like I canât do anything for her. I can hold her hand and try my best to keep her calm. But I canât fix it.â

If you travel Interstate 81 southbound in Botetourt County, you can expect delays during the evening and overnight hours. Work will take place nightly between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. this week. There will be alternating lane closures between mile markers 168 and 169 as crews pave. This work is part of the I-81 Safety Improvement Project.
Part of Maury River Road or Route 39 in Rockbridge County will be closed today until 5 p.m. Crews are upgrading a crossing between Route 780 and Route 601. Detours are in place.

There will be alternating lane closures between mile markers 168 and 169 as crews pave. This work is part of the I-81 Safety Improvement Project. Exit 168 will be closed tonight.
Martinsville City leaders will present the city’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year to city council. Council will hold work session later this week and next with with a public hearing scheduled for May 25th. Council could vote to approve the budget on June 8th.
