Capsize may be a greater safety risk than skippers and
owners of smaller passenger boats think – even with vessel
designs perceived to be the safest.
Today’s final
report from the Transport Accident Investigation Commission
says a water taxi capsized off Stewart Island in September
2019 due to the vessel being less stable than anticipated in
the worse-than-expected sea conditions.
The Henerata
was crossing Paterson Inlet with the skipper and six
passengers on board when worsening weather conditions forced
it side-on to the waves. It filled with water and capsized,
trapping the passengers inside in an air pocket contaminated

Chow was awarded The Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for services to immigrant communities.
Ingram is recognised as a maritime industry and recreational fishing advocate who has been a member of the New Zealand Recreational Fishing Council for the past 35 years, including 12 years as president. He is a past president of the New Zealand Marine Transport Association (NZMTA), where he contributed significantly to the Maritime Transport Act 1994.

An investigation has been launched after firefighters were called to a potentially explosive chemical leak on board a ship docked at Port Taranaki. Emergency services were called about 2.10am, with two fire engines from the New Plymouth brigade and one from New Plymouth West responding, when crew aboard logging ship the
Luenho raised concerns about the smell of fumigant aluminium phosphide. New Plymouth fire brigade senior station officer Jason Crowe confirmed firefighters were initially called after “high levels” of a fumigant gas were detected aboard the ship.

A Transport Accident Investigation Commission team has
been on site today at the Kekerengu River mouth, commencing
investigations into the causes and circumstances of a fatal
accident involving an Airbus Helicopter EC120.
The
Chief Investigator of Accidents, Harald Hendel, says the
helicopter with five persons on board lost control,
descended and impacted shallow water close to the beach at
around 12:40pm yesterday, 15 December 2020.
“This
opening stage of the investigation has involved a great deal
of work by the on-site team and their colleagues in
Wellington,” said Mr Hendel.
