Shoshone Bannock Tribe responds to Pocatello mascot change @wernotmascots #WeAreNotMascots FORT HALL, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK)-With over 800 American Indian students attending the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District, the Shoshone Bannock Tribes are officially applauding the school board’s decision to drop the “Indian” mascot at Pocatello High School. In a public statement, Tribal officials said Wednesday they recognize the high school’s  traditions of the past, they encouraged the Pocatello area community surrounding the Reservation to “learn, engage, and accept the rich, historical views of the tribes in teaching historical interpretations.” The tribal statement continued: “When it comes to public education, we should all strive to meet common efforts to provide a safe learning environment, that is respectful of different races, ethnicities, views, and religions. Share This Photo and video courtesy KPVI POCATELLO The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 Board of Trustees landed on a new mascot for Pocatello High School Tuesday. Beginning June 1, 2021, when the “Indians” moniker is retired, Pocatello High School will become the “Thunder.” Before the vote at Tuesday night’s meeting, the floor was turned over for public comment. Dozens of people have shown up at previous meetings, but only three people showed up on Tuesday and all had a message with a similar theme. Randy’L Teton spoke on behalf of the Fort Hall Business Council saying, “I am here to provide the support to your efforts of changing the Pocatello High School’s school mascot.”

SD25 picks Thunder for new Pocatello High School mascot Pocatello High School POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - During Tuesday night s regular meeting, the School District 25 Board of Trustees unanimously voted to replace the Pocatello Indians with the Pocatello Thunder. Randy L Teton, the Public Affairs Director for the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, spoke in favor of the Board s decision to retire the Indians mascot, saying this is something the Tribes have been requesting since the 90s. After retiring the Indians mascot in September, the Board asked for public input to find the new identity for the district s oldest high school. The district conducted a survey to find the community s favorite mascot choice.
