Blue chips lagging on governance and harassment By Sarah Kendell 22 July 2021
New research commissioned by the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors has indicated that Australia’s largest companies still have a serious skill gap when it comes to incorporating workplace harassment in governance frameworks, indicating a potential risk for major investors.
ACSI commissioned the research by Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins to look at how ASX 200 boards were dealing with the issue of workplace harassment, following AMP’s dramatic tumble in share price since revelations around former AMP Capital chief Boe Pahari became public knowledge.
One hundred eighteen (118) of the top 200 companies on the ASX chose to participate in the research, with just 19 per cent of those surveyed saying their boards had some accountability for harassment incidents.
Millions wasted, reputations damaged
Three years after the royal commission explored the fees-for-no-service scandal, ASIC has dropped the criminal probe into AMP on advice from the DPP.
Catherine Brenner says a more pragmatic approach from ASIC could lead to “better outcomes for consumers and the market”.

Last Friday, as residents of Greater Sydney pondered just how much longer its three-week lockdown needed to drag on, the corporate cop announced a criminal investigation into the conduct of financial services giant AMP had been dropped, with no further action taken.
News that AMP was off the hook and would not face criminal charges in relation to charging financial advice fees to customers who didn’t receive any, received little more than a collective shrug from the public, preoccupied with the return of the worst parts of the pandemic.
Pahari accuser tells of AMP hypocrisy By Sarah Kendell 21 July 2021
The woman at the centre of harassment allegations that saw AMP engulfed in scandal last year says she was “treated no better than a waitress at a restaurant” during her time at the wealth giant, despite its comprehensive diversity and inclusion policies.
Addressing the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors (ACSI) annual conference on Wednesday, former AMP Capital executive Julia Szlakowski detailed her experiences working for the fund manager, during which time she filed a harassment complaint against its former chief Boe Pahari.
“I never imagined as a qualified professional in a company that holds the public’s trust that I would be treated no better than a waitress in a restaurant,” Ms Szlakowski said.
