Filed under: Bevo’s Daily Roundup: Op-ed: Tom Herman’s firing, multi-million dollar payout ‘bad national publicity’ for Texas during pandemic Share this story A new opinion piece in the Austin American-Statesman pulls no punches at the Texas Longhorns, after the university opted to pay out roughly $20 million to recently fired head coach Tom Herman and his coaching staff. Notably, this was during a pandemic. From the Statesman: “Educational and human values aside, the consequences of this firing and hiring are bad national publicity. Even Sports Illustrated sees the callous irony that UT athletics, after laying off 35 people, not filling another 35 positions and having almost 300 employees take a temporary pay cut, effectively is throwing away over $20 million. Money is critically needed elsewhere at UT Austin for academics and outreach initiatives. One response, of course, will be that the money for coaches comes from private donors. No matter. Lions DL coach Bo Davis taking job at Texas, Lions QB coach Sean Ryan top candidate for Panthers

Photo by Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley will interview for a job with the Cincinnati Bengals, but he may not be the only Lions coach that has drawn interest elsewhere. According to 24/7 Sports, defensive line coach Bo Davis is expected to take the same position with the University of Texas under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. It’s a logical hire for Sarkisian, seeing as they both come from Alabama roots, and Davis held the Texas DL job back in 2011-13. Given that Davis was very much a Matt Patricia guy, it’s not surprising to see him move on from his time in Detroit. And given that the Lions’ defense finished with some historically bad numbers, it may be best for them to do a full reset with the defensive coaching staff.
