Poetry Foundation and Poetry Ireland Announce…

The longed for tidal wave Of justice can rise up And hope and history rhyme. Engaging Young People with Poetry Hope Rhymes will highlight the Poetry Foundation and Poetry Ireland’s respective poetry recitation programs for young people, strengthening the efforts of both organizations where their work aligns. Niamh O’Donnell, director of Poetry Ireland, said the organization was delighted to be entering into this new exciting partnership with the Poetry Foundation. “Our partnership will help us to shape narratives and, importantly, shift norms,” said O’Donnell. “We’re looking forward to new collaborations and conversations that will take place through Hope Rhymes, bringing a further spotlight to poets and their work, and increasing the opportunities to engage children and young people in their enjoyment of poetry.”

Callout for submissions for Kilkenny Broadsheet 2021 Reporter: );   ); Budding poets are invited to make their submissions for the publication of the 21st issue of the Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet. The aim of the publication is to give Kilkenny writers, born or based in Kilkenny city and county, a platform for their work. Kilkenny County Council’s Arts Office have announced Jessica Traynor as this year’s editor. Last year 47 writers answered the call out for submissions, sending in 91 poems for consideration. Twelve poems, by 12 poets, were selected by editor Colm Keegan for publication and a further three poets were shortlisted. Following publication, the Broadsheet is available free throughout the city and county via the library branches and other venues.

It s a good news week for Presentation Castleisland

Fiona Brosnan Fiona Brosnan, a student at the school, was confirmed as a finalist in ActionTalks national speech-writing competition run by ActionAid, which is open to all students aged 14 to 17 years old. The competition is taking place entirely online this year and the topics focus on the pandemic. Another Kerry student, Labhraidh Costello, a student at Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, Tralee, has also been chosen as one of the eight finalists in the competition. We had a challenge on our hands choosing the finalists this year, said Siobhán McGee, CEO of ActionAid Ireland. As well as the high volume of entries, we could see that students from across the country worked hard on the speeches, including researching how the pandemic had affected people in other countries.
