The THA and the PNM
Friday 22 January 2021
THE EDITOR: The PNM is the only party that has been consistent and loyal to Tobagonians, having contested every THA election from the Assembly s inception in 1980, to the present day.
The records show that the very first THA elections in 1980 were won by the Democratic Action Committee (DAC) led by ANR Robinson, which took eight seats while the PNM took four. The Fargo House Movement (FHM) led by Dr Winston Murray failed to win a seat.
Since then, 11 political parties have opposed the PNM in THA elections. They are/have been: the DAC, the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC), the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), the United National National Congress (UNC), the People’s Empowerment Party (PEP), Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP), The Platform of Truth (TPT), The Movement for Transformation (TMF), the FHM, Tobago Forwards (TF) and the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP).
Wasp warns PNM leader of election day sting
Wane “Wasp” Clarke -
Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) Lambeau/ Signal Hill candidate, Wane “Wasp” Clarke, has warned PNM Tobago Council leader Tracy Davidson-Celestine that she chose the wrong area to contest in the January 25 THA election.
Davidson-Celestine, originally from Betsy s Hope, is the PNM candidate for Lambeau/Signal Hill. She served as area representative for the Parlatuvier/ L’Anse Fourmi/Speyside electoral district for eight years, from 2009-2017.
At a political meeting at the Signal Hill recreational grounds on Wednesday night, Clarke said: “If she thinks that she run from country and come down here, I could tell her, choosing Lambeau, Signal Hill, Patience Hill to run and come, you just choose the wrong place – you pick the wrong fight.”
DR RITA PEMBERTON
The impending arrival of the new inter-island vessel which has been named in honour of the late APT James, Tobago’s representative in the Legislative Council of TT from 1946-1961, has stimulated renewed interest in James and his contribution to Tobago.
James died on January 5, 1962 from a cerebral haemorrhage due to hypertension and this week marks the 59th anniversary of his death.
While there has been much focus on his political life, save for gossip clips, his personal life has not received academic attention.
This is an opportune time to expose the realities of his family life so that the man can be fully understood. In so doing, the parallels between his practices at home and the vision he had for the development of Tobago will become evident.
