COUVA North MP Ravi Ratiram has asked both the Commissioner of Police (CoP) Gary Griffith and the Integrity Commission to investigate a possible diversion of some food boxes/hampers meant for MPs to distribute to needy constituents.
He complained that a former PNM general election candidate publicly announced on Facebook that she had distributed Namdevco hampers.
The MP asked each entity to investigate whether an allocation of 100 food boxes to the candidate s charitable foundation had been a breach of the Integrity in Public Life Act, and asked Griffith to conduct a criminal investigation.

Speaker’s reason for abstention
Reference is being made to the article entitled ‘Speaker’s abstention has brought “law of the jungle”‘ (May 3).
By way of right of reply, attention is being drawn to the press release issued by the Office of the Speaker on May 3 on the vote taken last week during the last meeting of the Committee on Standards in Public Life.
In this press release, Anġlu Farrugia is making reference to the motivation of his vote and to his argumentation that, even though he shared some of Commissioner George Hyzler’s views on the case in question, he could not vote in favour of the report in its entirety because the Standards in Public Life Act does not permit voting in favour of parts of the report and not of others. He, therefore, maintains that, in the particular circumstances of the case in question, he felt that his only option was to abstain.
There was no breach of ethics in connection with the appointment of Malta’s ambassador to Ghana, the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life has concluded.
Standards Commissioner George Hyzler investigated a complaint by Anthony De Bono, former Maltese ambassador to Jordan, that Jean Claude Galea Mallia should not have been appointed to the position in Ghana.
The complaint focussed on Galea Mallia s business relationship with another Maltese person who was living in Ghana and who was wanted by the police in Malta.
It was also alleged that then Foreign Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela should have informed parliament’s public appointments committee about the links between the ambassador and the wanted person when he asked the committee to consider the appointment in October 2018.
