The Town of Stony Plain is taking steps to ensure its resilience against current and future emergencies.
During the May 3 regular council meeting, council members voted to accept the Emergency Management update for information which highlighted the Town’s internal response to the COVID-19 pandemic thus far.

“As we’re all aware, COVID-19 really was the theme in 2020 related to emergency management and it continues in 2021. The Emergency Management Plan does provide a guide for our municipal response to an emergency that may happen in the community. It’s not necessarily a game plan for our citizens, it’s a game plan for ourselves with respect to responding to emergencies,” said Karl Hill, General Manager of Community and Protective Services.

The night of May 4, 1971, François Richard of Saint-Jean Vianney in Quebec’s Saguenay Region, was glued to his TV set. It was Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals, Jean Béliveau leading the Montreal Canadiens against the Chicago Blackhawks.
It was a close game Chicago would end up winning 2-1 in overtime when Richard heard shouting outside. He went out to investigate and was stunned by what he saw. A section of town, larger than the area of Dow’s Lake, was disappearing into the Shipshaw River.

• Communications plan. The local network could be affected, so ensure you have alternate methods (text message, social media) identified for your contacts.
• Evacuation plan. Identify meeting places near your home and outside your neighborhood along with the evacuation routes.
• Emergency numbers list. Include police, fire, family doctor, Telehealth, Poison control, Friends/Family that can lend a hand, Insurance contact and Utility companies.
• Utility Shut-off Procedure. Water valve, electrical panel, gas valve.
• Special needs. You kit should provide for medical needs. Medical condition, medical history, health-care contacts, extra medications/supplies
