Amnesty International on Friday said that at least 17,000 health workers have died from COVID-19 over the last year.
The organisation called for urgent action to speed up the vaccination of millions of frontline health workers around the world.
The grave warning came as global inequalities in vaccine access continued to widen. More than half the world’s doses have so far been administered in just 10 rich countries, making up less than 10 per cent of the world’s population, while over 100 countries are yet to vaccinate a single person.

RCEP unlikely to benefit developing members in short term: analysts
The Regional Cooperation Economic Partnership (RCEP) is unlikely to bring immediate significant benefits for its developing member countries in terms of flow of goods and services or major infrastructure investments, analysts and economists said.
The pact needs to be ratified by all countries, which may take time, and has different levels of tariff reductions for each country and product, the experts told the Reuters Global Markets Forum.
That means labour-intensive countries may get more imports than exports, particularly during the pandemic, over the short-term.
The RCEP is seen as a China-backed alternative to the U.S.-led Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The Federal Government needs to embrace public sector solutions in addressing the water challenges Nigerians face, as the contents of the National Water Bill 2020 are undemocratic and inhuman.
This was the position taken by participants at a one-day labour, civil society organisations, CSOs, and communities’ consultation on the National Water Bill 2020 on Wednesday, in Lagos.
