Cosatu: Public servants salary freeze an insult

Cosatu: Public servants’ salary freeze an ’insult’ Share TRADE union federation Cosatu on Wednesday slammed the government and economists for pushing for a freeze of public servants’ salaries. Commemorating International Nurses Day, the country’s biggest federation described the government’s delay in improving its 0% offer to its employees as insulting. ”The failure by the government to pay nurses and other public servants their wage increases last year and the intransigent attitude they have adopted towards the current public service wage negotiations is regrettable and insulting, especially for the nurses that serve as front-line workers waging a war against a deadly disease,” Cosatu said in a statement.

BDP backbenchers are creators of their own misfortune

ADAM PHETLHE Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Members of Parliament who are not in the Executive are reportedly meeting His Excellency the President Dr M.E.K. Masisi this weekend over a variety of matters affecting the party and government. While the meeting is said to be the brainchild of the backbenchers in the main, it appears there are some from the Executive who share their concerns. According to those in the know, this meeting was sought immediately after the 2019 general election but was inexplicably delayed until this weekend. It should raise questions why they allowed this meeting to be delayed for so long when on their version, they had legitimate, hard-pressing national issues to be discussed. It is important to mention that the meeting comes when there are notable political fissures in the BDP occasioned by the latest turn of events in public service appointments and the general administration of the country by the President.

Union leaders last week said they intend to declare a dispute, which could lead to a strike. The government is offering no salary hikes this year while unions demand 7%.
