Democrats on Wednesday won control of the U.S. Senate, giving them majorities in both houses of Congress and the presidency.
Raphael Warnock beat Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Jon Ossoff bested Republican Sen. David Perdue in Georgia’s two runoff elections.
Those victories give Democrats 50 seats in the Senate, , which would effectively give them control because Vice President-elect Kamala Harris represents the tie-breaking vote.

I do not expect President Joe Biden to use executive powers to eliminate large chunks of student loan debt despite the fact 1 in 5 Americans has student loan debt and that our $1.6 trillion collective balance is higher than our total credit card debt balances.
I neither expect it, nor do I favor it. My objections, briefly summarized:
1. Debt cancellation favors higher income folks, as high debt correlates with high income.

As the Trump administration comes to a close, students, educators and parents should take solace that Betsy DeVos will also be vacating the White House. Trump’s Secretary of Education has consistently taken actions that undermined the public school system and hurt college hopefuls.
This comes as no surprise DeVos was thoroughly unqualified to run the department. Her family is listed by Forbes in 2016 as being the 351st richest in America (none of her money was earned through work in education). With her enormous wealth, she has spent decades lobbying to grossly loosen restrictions on charter schools schools that operate privately but still receive federal funding.
