Around Amherst: Craig’s Doors keeping shelter spots available longer. By SCOTT MERZBACH AMHERST Unlike many years when the emergency overnight homeless shelter closes for the season on May 1, Craig’s Doors will be able to keep its sites open for at least several more weeks. Executive Director Kevin Noonan said due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the congregate shelter with 14 beds operating at the Unitarian Meetinghouse will remain in service until July 31. The town recently completed an inspection to allow the extended operations. The shelter is supplemented by the Econo Lodge motel in Hadley, where 19 rooms will remain open through at least mid-June; and the University Lodge, with 20 rooms available until June 30, 2022.

BAKER CITY — Friendship and a public art project are the reasons there’s a colorful new bovine in front of the Baker Heritage Museum. Molly Wilson, who serves on the Baker City Public Arts Commission, is heading a project to place cow sculptures around Baker City. Her friends Cammy Warner and Diana Brown knew about the project. On a trip through Central Oregon last year, the trio discovered a large metal cow at an antique shop in Canyon City. Wilson knew it was perfect. All it took was a return trip with a horse trailer, and some hefting, and the blank canvas of a cow came to Baker City.

Palm Springs looking for volunteers to serve on boards, commissions City News Service Volunteers have until May 10 to apply to serve on one of nearly a dozen boards and commissions in Palm Springs, it was announced today. “We encourage all citizens interested in serving on a board or commission to apply now because the city is immediately looking to recruit for open positions,” City Clerk Anthony Mejia said. Applicants who are under the age of 18 will be considered, along with those who offer unique skills, experience or knowledge, the city said. Prospective applicants must either live, work or attend school within the city.

Written by By Stephen Wyer/Special to the Town Crier Los Altos Public Arts Commission members hope to have a bronze sculpture of Walter Singer relocated from the Los Altos History Museum to the Chamber of Commerce property by the end of the year. Town Crier File Photo A bronze sculpture of Walter Singer graces Veterans Community Plaza in 2014, above. The bust was removed and put in storage in 2015. The Public Arts Commission plans to display it once again. The bust of the late downtown Los Altos businessman, known by local residents as “Mr. Los Altos,” has remained in storage at the museum since 2015. The sculpture had previously been on display in Veterans Community Plaza since 1993, but it was removed when city leaders wanted to create more open space in the plaza.
