Why public interest litigation is rising

Why public interest litigation is rising Monday February 15 2021 Summary While the transformative Constitution is rightly credited for the quality of public interest litigation in the country, the catalytic role played by the Judiciary equally deserves recognition. As a young lawyer I attended a training for public interest lawyers in environmental law in Uganda over 20 years ago. At that time, I marvelled at the robustness of the Ugandan cases and the innovative way the court decisions were couched. Investigation alleges worker abuse on South Korean fishing vessels exporting to US, EU By Share An investigation by the Advocate for Public Interest Law (APIL) and the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) has found that migrant workers onboard South Korea’s distant-water fishing fleet – which fishes for products eventually shipped to the U.S., European Union, and United Kingdom – are subject to abuse. The investigation of 40 vessels – of which 29 are authorized to export to the E.U. and U.K. – found that the crew of many vessels reported “violent attacks and illegal activities,” a release from the two organizations said. Of 54 Indonesian former crew interviewed, more than a quarter reported experiencing physical abuse, and 63 percent reported verbal abuse.

Ricky Tomlinson to begin legal challenge against 50-years injustice visited on the Shrewsbury pickets

ACTOR and former building worker Ricky Tomlinson will appear in court this week to challenge the injustice visited on the Shrewsbury pickets almost 50 years ago. Mr Tomlinson, from Liverpool, is one of the “Shrewsbury 24” workers who were unjustly convicted of offences relating to the 1972 nationwide strike on construction sites. He will be appearing in the Court of Appeal in London on Wednesday alongside his friend Arthur Murray, who was also convicted. They will be represented by the Public Interest Law Centre. Others of the 24 will be represented by the Shrewsbury 24 Campaign, which was launched in 2006. The appeals are based on new evidence that statements were destroyed and legal arguments about a highly biased TV documentary, Red Under the Bed, which was screened by ITV in during the trial.
