An East Otago mother says she s been left confused and concerned as blood test results start to roll in after a lead contamination testing blitz.
Mother-of-three Jazhr Hansen has been told her baby s blood test result showed a lead level under half of the DHB s threshold.

It s been more than a week since residents in Waikouaiti, Karitane and Hawksbury Village were told not to drink or cook with their tap water.
Since then, hundreds of people have been tested at the free community blood testing clinic which opened on Tuesday with some part-time and former residents also requesting tests.

The Otago Regional Council also retested the Waikouaiti River, where the township’s water was sourced, on Thursday. A spokeswoman for OceanaGold, which operates Macraes mine about 50 kilometres northwest of the affected townships, said the contamination was “not associated with the Macraes operation or our gold mining activities”. The type of rock the company mined contained no associated lead, she said. The company tested water around the mining site each month for multiple trace elements, including lead.
