“Gemma Bovery” made me think of “Roxanne,” the fantastic 1987 Steve Martin-Fred Schepisi comic adaptation of Rostand’s “Cyrano de Bergerac.” Both are based on great French tragedies, taking elements from their source and refashioning them. But while Rostand’s masterwork became a comedy in the guise of Martin’s brilliant screenplay, little is done in “Gemma Bovery” to transform Flaubert’s plot. Sure, the events are scrambled, with minor changes here and there, but if you know what happens in “Madame Bovary,” you will not be surprised by this film. In fact, you’ll probably be as irritated as I was by “Gemma Bovery”’s attempts to be clever and meta.

In 2019, Sophie Burrows won Student Illustrator of the Year at the V&A Illustration Awards for her graphic novel, Crushing. A worldless self-published graphic novel that has drawn comparison to the works of Raymond Briggs and Posy Simmonds, she describes it as a story that explores the ups and downs of romantic interaction, lust and longing. Born from an interest in interwoven stories within a crowd, I wanted to explore the romantic trope of eyes meeting in a crowded room, and the expectations, interpretations and misunderstandings that can arise from a glance between two people.

It probably should have occurred to me prior to seeing the Stephen Frears film Tamara Drewe, an adaptation of the graphic novel by Posy Simmonds that used to appear regularly in the Guardian, that a critical consensus had been reached around it for good reason. However being the ambitious, aspiring writer that I am I was determined to try and look at the film from an original angle and make a startling first impression upon all of you learned readers, dazzling you with my astute, perfectly phrased observations.
