MLK50: Justice Through Journalism had an exclusive interview with former vice president and long-time environmentalist Al Gore on Sunday after his speech at a rally in Southwest Memphis in opposition to the proposed Byhalia Connection Pipeline.
Gore has been devoted to tackling climate change since leaving office in 2001, and is the founder of The Climate Reality Project, an international organization devoted to developing solutions to the crisis. His 2006 documentary about his campaign against global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” won two Oscars, and in 2007, he received a Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Tuesday the Memphis City Council unanimously passed a resolution in opposition to the Byhalia connection pipeline.

“All members of the Memphis City Council have signed onto the resolution,” said Councilmember JB Smiley.

In the resolution, it states, “Byhalia Pipeline has not secured the necessary permits or authorizations from the City of Memphis.”

Over the last year, residents of South Memphis, Tennessee have fought to stop the construction of the Byhalia Connection Pipeline. The companies behind Byhalia promise economic opportunity and neighborhood investment. But members of the community have organized against the further development of oil and gas infrastructure in an area plagued by a cancer risk four times the national average.
In December 2019, Valero Energy and the Texas-based company Plains All American Pipeline announced a joint venture that would run for 49 miles, directly south out of Memphis with a long eastward curve through Mississippi. At the end of the line, Byhalia would connect to an existing pipeline, carrying as much as $21 million dollars
