Wildflowers lead to Folsom Lake s hidden bridge

When lake levels drop low enough, remnants of a flooded town emerge. Author: John Bartell Updated: 10:44 PM PDT May 8, 2021 PILOT HILL, Calif. Spring has very much sprung at Folsom Lake and the lupine wildflowers are everywhere.  A bloom of this magnitude is a rare sight at Folsom Lake, especially at the beginning of what looks to be drought year. Satellite images from 1985 to 2020 show the fluctuating water levels every time drought hits Folsom Lake. This year, lake levels significantly dropped during wildflower season, allowing the lupine plant to grow and emerge where the water once was. The low lake levels also allowed something else to emerge.

Cronan Ranch Trailhead parking area to temporarily close for 700 weed-eating sheep

Cronan Ranch Trailhead parking area to temporarily close for 700 weed-eating sheep Space needed to unload animals for invasive species management EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – A flock of nearly 700 sheep will arrive at the Bureau of Land Management’s Cronan Ranch Trailhead near Pilot Hill on Tuesday, May 11, to start their summer of grazing on troublesome yellow starthistle and medusahead plants. As a result, the parking area will be closed that day to allow room for unloading the animals and moving them to the recreation area. Visitors wanting access to the recreation area on May 11 should use the parking areas at the nearby Magnolia Ranch for horseback riding and Greenwood Creek trailhead for hiking and biking. It is recommended visitors arrive early to find parking and have an alternate plan in case parking areas are full.

Body found with gunshot wound in Pilot Mountain

May 17, 2021 A group of faculty and staff from Surry Community College ran in the Surry County School System’s MAD Dash 5K race held at Fisher River Park in Dobson, as well as raced virtually, in April. Several team members medaled in their age group. The race benefited the Surry County Schools Educational Foundation. The SCC team included a variety of college employees from different departments. Members were: Stephen Best, web specialist; Tara Best, accounting instructor; Tony Martin, vice president of finance; Rebekah Tilley, systems technician, all of Dobson; Mark Tucker, athletic director, and Jason Gautier, network administrator, both of Pilot Mountain; Corey France, senior computer technician, and Seth Jackson, network technician, both of Mount Airy; and Daniel Reikowsky, director of institutional research, of Elkin.

Pilot area post offices collecting food

The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is scheduled for Saturday but, for the second consecutive year, the COVID-19 pandemic will prevent letter carriers from collecting food at mailboxes. As an alternative, a pair of local post offices will be accepting food donations in their lobbies. The National Association of Letter Carriers and partner sponsors are encouraging participants to give monetary donations online by choosing a local food bank from a list provided at nalc.org/food. The plan has incurred difficulty locally, however, as the Pilot Mountain Outreach Center, which normally receives Pilot Mountain area food donations, has not been able to be included on the list due to their own technical difficulties.
