Thrilling images of fast-flowing rivers flooded social media at the weekend as residents of parched Nelson Mandela Bay celebrated good rains falling not only over the city but also over the all-important catchment area in the Kouga Mountains to the west.
SA Weather Service spokesperson for the office in Gqeberha, Garth Sampson, said on Sunday the results were positive.

While there has been widespread applause for an imminent ban on canned lion hunting and captive lion breeding in SA, fears have now been raised that thousands of lions born in these facilities may have to be euthanised.
There is also concern that environment minister Barbara Creecy’s recommendation to ban the practices could lead to a boom in illegal trade.

Water affairs minister Lindiwe Sisulu will go cap-in-hand to finance counterpart Tito Mboweni in a bid to secure critical funding for Nelson Mandela Bay to counter the effects of the drought.
Sisulu was in the Bay on Friday to get a better understanding of the challenges facing the metro and how her department could support the municipality.

The provincial health department’s dirty laundry was aired on Monday as Nehawu and the DA spotlighted a crisis unfolding at two Nelson Mandela Bay state hospitals.
Responding to allegations that Gqeberha’s Livingstone and Provincial hospital had run out of clean linen, Eastern Cape health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo retorted that the matter was being exaggerated and while supplies were low they did have some left.
