Purdue Polytechnic expressed interest Thursday in moving into the Gary community — but not until state intervention is resolved in the Gary Community School Corp.
GARY â The Gary Community School Corp. is sharing this week the first in a series of new quarterly reports tracking progress in district turnaround efforts.
The two-page report shares a general overview of four pillars established in a Path Forward plan revealed this summer after the state opted to continue its relationship with Gary Schools Recovery, a subsidiary of management services provider MGT Consulting.
The report plays up recent successes such as increased student enrollment and course offerings at the Gary Area Career Center, the creation of new school advisory committees and the launch this school year of a new 1:1 technology initiative in the Gary school district, which was taken over by the state in 2017.
GARY â The Gary Community School Corp. is progressing in its goal to sell dozens of vacant and blighted school buildings.
The district has sold 14 properties â including its Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts Academy, closed in 2018 â school leaders announced this week.
Many of the building have sat empty for years, developing into both neighborhood eyesores and magnets for crime across the city.
The Gary school corporation publicly listed two dozen sites for sale in early 2020, following orders from city leaders to demolish buildings at more than half a dozen of the districtâs most troublesome sites.
In early March, Gary schoolsâ leadership announced interest had been expressed for all 24 properties listed â totaling more than 70 offers.
