School board proceeds with superintendent search The school district’s current superintendent, David Howard, has announced he will retire this summer. School board members held a special meeting Monday afternoon to meet with representatives of the Kansas Association of School Boards. The organization will be assisting the board with the search for a new superintendent. “You’re going to have a lot of qualified candidates apply for the job based on your location, based on your reputation, your size,” said Brian Jordan, deputy executive director of KASB. Jordan said the Basehor-Linwood school system is a growing district with a strong reputation.

KC-area restaurant, grocery, brewery updates in COVID-19: December openings, closing Joyce Smith, The Kansas City Star Dec. 15 Every month we run a long list of restaurant, grocery and brewery openings, closings and what will be coming soon. The COVID-19 crisis has upended the restaurant industry and pushed back many openings for weeks or months. This month we have the return of a Leawood restaurant that has been closed since March and more than a dozen new eateries, including several dessert options and doughnut stops. But a half dozen locally-owned operations are closing permanently. Openings Bravo Italian Kitchen in Leawood s Town Center Plaza, has been closed since the March shelter-in-place orders. Now the restaurant, at 5005 W. 117th St., has reopened under new corporate owners.

3 more COVID-19 deaths recorded in Leavenworth County

Leavenworth County had 119 new positive community cases between Monday and this past Wednesday, Dec. 2. There also have been a new U.S. Penitentiary positive case and two Lansing Correctional Facility case and another case transferred to another jurisdiction. There also were 115 community recoveries during that time. As of Monday’s Leavenworth County Health Department report, LCHD was monitoring 304 active cases, with three currently being hospitalized. LCHD also reported another COVID-19 related death in its Wednesday, Dec. 2, report and two more in the Monday report. Two men, one in his 70s and another in his 80s, died of COVID-19 complications during the weekend. Last week’s reported death involved a woman in her 50s. There now have been 34 COVID-19 related deaths in the county, with 28 involving community residents and four being Lansing Correctional Facility inmates.
