House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Thursday announced the appointment of Margaret Grun Kibben, a retired Navy rear admiral, as House chaplain - the first woman to hold such a post in either chamber of Congress.
Kibben, a Presbyterian minister, has previously served as the Navy s chief chaplain and the chaplain of the Marine Corps.
In a statement, Pelosi, the first woman to lead a party in Congress, noted the historic nature of Kibben s appointment as well as the position itself, which dates to the first Congress in 1789.

Pelosi called the appointment historic and thanked the bipartisan group of House members who conducted the search. Kibben brings decades of decorated experience in the military and the ministry, as a retired Rear Admiral who served as the U.S. Navy’s Chief Chaplain and the chaplain of the Marine Corps, Pelosi said in a statement. Her integrity, experience and patriotism will serve the Congress and the Country well, as she ministers to the needs of Members.

WASHINGTON Pandemic aid secured, Congress turned Monday to confront the White House on additional year-end priorities after President Donald Trump signed a $2 trillion-plus COVID-19 relief and federal spending package that will provide relief for millions of Americans.
The House gaveled in for the rare holiday week session to vote on Trump’s unmet demand for larger $2,000 virus relief checks. Democrats who control the House favor the larger stipends, beyond the $600 payments included in the massive COVID bill. But the president’s push for more spending is forcing his Republican allies who oppose the higher payments into a tough spot.
