UPDATE: What began as a local traffic stop produced the arrest of a fugitive ex-con wanted for shooting two men in Paterson late last summer, authorities said.
Police in Pequannock who stopped Johnny Rodriguez, 33, of Paterson near the corner of Van Dyk Place and West Parkway around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday summoned their city colleagues after discovering an outstanding warrant.
Authorities said he and fellow ex-con Christopher Rodriguez-Mejia, 25, wounded two city men in a shooting in the area of Paterson Avenue and Liberty Street last Sept. 8.
The victims – one 32, the other 19 – survived their injuries, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora and Pequannock Township Police Chief Daniel Comune said in a joint announcement.

The first of the stormy night s three tornadoes touched down at 8:39 p.m. in Clemmons, moving northwest for half a mile.
A second hit just minutes later near Poplar Street in Winston-Salem, cutting a swath of devastation more than 10 miles long through Ardmore, Buena Vista and Old Salem.
A third tornado, this one at 8:45 p.m., virtually destroyed a hangar at Smith Reynolds airport and left planes scarred and scattered.
It would be weeks â months or years for some â before anything seemed normal again.

Hoboken to expand composting program

Hoboken’s drop-off composting program diverted 27.71 tons of food waste from landfills in 2020.
Hoboken will triple the size of its free composting program which the city’s Department of Environmental Services and Community Compost Company say will divert roughly 5.6 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from traditional waste disposal.
The program will increase from four compost drop-off locations to 12 later this spring.
Last year, Hoboken’s drop-off composting program diverted 27.71 tons of food waste from landfills, and offset 1,584 gallons of gas and nearly 35,000 driven miles.
