Three wildfires near the towering Mount Shasta volcano an hour s drive from the Oregon border have burned around 60 square miles (155 square kilometers) of land. Property damage was evident at the Salt Fire, which broke out Wednesday near Interstate 5 and prompted evacuations for some roads in Lakehead, an unincorporated community of around 700 people north of the city of Redding.

Cooler temperatures Thursday into Friday helped firefighters who are trying to get a handle on two fires burning in Siskiyou County. As of Friday morning, the Lava Fire and Tennant Fire destroyed more than 50 miles of forest land. The Lava Fire is burning about three miles northeast of the city of Weed in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.  The Tennant Fire, burning northeast of the Lava Fire, about three miles northwest of Bray in the Klamath National Forest. It was first reported on Monday.
