Pat McGrath Becomes First Makeup Artist to Receive Damehood Gianluca Russo
Pat McGrath is finally getting the royal treatment she deserves.
The legendary makeup artist is now the first to receive a damehood by Queen Elizabeth II,
People reports. Pat is being recognized for her work as British
Vogue’s Beauty Editor-at-Large, as well as running her own makeup empire, and for the countless projects she s worked on over the years. Pat has carved a unique, impactful spot for herself in the makeup industry and now, even the Queen herself is taking interest. I am beyond humbled that I have been awarded a Damehood in the Queen’s New Year 2021 Honours List as a D.B.E - Dame of the British Empire for Services to the Fashion and Beauty Industry and Diversity, Pat said in regard to the news.
McGrath is known for her editorial work with i-D Magazine and Vogue – which have resulted in some of the magazines’ best-recognised covers – and her runway collaborations with the late Alexander McQueen, and John Galliano during his time as creative director of Dior.
Her work utilises materials such as feathers, lace, pearls and prosthetics to blur the line between traditional makeup artistry and special effects.
In an Instagram post acknowledging her receipt of the honour, McGrath thanked her mother, Jean McGrath, a dressmaker and first-generation Jamaican immigrant, whom she frequently cites as the inspiration for her career. McGrath was born in Northampton in 1970 and moved to London as a teenager in the late-1980s, where she met many of the people who would become lifelong collaborators, including the British Vogue editor Edward Enninful.

PEOPLE. “My mother’s obsession with beauty and fashion ignited my passion for this amazing industry, and I feel blessed to have the privilege of working with some of the most extraordinary people throughout my career.”

Legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath was named a DBE, or a Dame of the British Empire, on Wednesday for her services to the fashion and beauty industries, as well as her diversity efforts.
She said on Instagram that she was beyond humbled to receive the honor, and dedicated her award to all makeup artists.
