It was early the morning of June 1, nearly a year ago. She was sitting with her back to the salon she’s owned more than 35 years. Its windows had been broken out, and when she lifted her head and looked around, she saw beauty products from her shop scattered along Ashland Avenue.
The shelves at Tess’s Place Style Shop, 1605 W. Garfield Blvd., were nearly empty of inventory. Her salon chairs were turned over. Hair clippers were stolen. Shattered glass littered the inside. She had wanted her shop to be a sacred place, one where her clients could come in and feel better about themselves. But it had been violated, and she was ready to give up.

Cardinal Blase Cupich announced today that Rev. Michael Pfleger is being reinstated early next month as the senior pastor of St. Sabina Parish after the Archdiocese of Chicago cleared him to return following an internal probe into allegations of sexual abuse.
In a letter to St. Sabina’s congregation, Cupich said the archdiocese’s independent review board “concluded there is no reason to suspect Father Pfleger is guilty of these allegations.” Cupich noted Pfleger will return to his position starting June 5.
My Block, My Hood, My City models walk a Red Line train runway Saturday to show off the organization’s summer clothing line and raise funds for its programs. Starting at the Howard Red Line going south, youth involved in its programs modeled clothes, sang and performed spoken word poetry.

As a Red Line trained rolled south Saturday afternoon it wasn’t picking up and dropping it off passengers unless you count the models that strutted and danced down the aisles of the privately-chartered train to hit songs by Dua Lipa, Beyoncé and others.
