Climate change: Portugal leading action to save the planet - European Union

By Len Port Since taking over the presidency of the Council of the European Union from Germany at the start of this year, Portugal has emphasised that climate change is “an existential threat to humanity” and has given the subject top priority in the run-up to November’s crucial United Nations COP-26 summit in Glasgow. At a meeting entitled Climate Change – New Economic Models organised by the EU Council last Friday, the Portuguese minister for the environment and climate action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, told participants that “Portugal was the first country in the world to commit itself to carbon neutrality and it firmly believes that we can only create value and grow the economy within the limits of the natural system.”

Through a video message, the head of the Portuguese Government and the European commissioner responsible for the European Ecological Pact will mark the opening session of the high-level conference Climate Change - New Economic Models , organised by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action in the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. According to a note released by the organisation, this event aims to discuss the contribution of new economic models, including the circular economy and the sustainable bioeconomy , in combating climate change and, simultaneously, in promoting an economic and social recovery, fair and equitable, within the limits of the natural system .

The Portuguese Minister for the Environment and Climate Action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes took part in the webinar organised by the Portuguese Energy Association (APE) and the Energy Agency (ADENE), at which the main European policies for the environment, climate action and energy were presented. During the event, which brought together members of the World Energy Council (WEC), João Pedro Matos Fernandes stressed the Portuguese Presidency’s five key objectives: to achieve a Europe that is resilient, social, green, digital and global. Guaranteeing that the European Union has the vision, programme and financial instruments to face up to the current crisis, the minister underlined, as holder of the environment portfolio, the five main axes of the Portuguese Presidency: “climate action; the circular economy; zero pollution (including chemicals); biodiversity; and cross-cutting issues”, insisting that “this is the time to deliver a fair, green and digital recovery”.
