Time for a clean slate in Lansing.
Wednesday was Opening Day for the new legislature and with it came new leadership and a batch of rookie lawmakers, three from Northern Michigan
As the 101st Legislature kicked off , Speaker of the House Jason Wentworth is focusing on transparency and accountability in state government. The new fresh faces from Northern Michigan agree with that sentiment.
“People need to recognize that this is a real thing we work for the people,” says Representative John Damoose of Harbor Springs
It’s a common refrain for those just getting into state politics, to be a change and a voice for your community.
And those 18 Michigan Republican lawmakers bear some responsibility for stoking and fomenting the anger and mistrust that metastasized into political violence in Washington, D.C. and in Lansing. As a result, Republicans, Democrats and independents across the country and in Michigan are speaking up, voicing concerns and distancing themselves from this unpatriotic group.
We know that several Republicans in the Michigan House of Representatives wrote a letter to Vice President Mike Pence asking him to delay finalization of the Nov. 3 election results by 10 days so lawmakers could, “meet, investigate and as a body vote on certification or decertification of the election.”

The commission that manages the common areas of the Michigan Capitol adopted a policy Monday that bans openly carrying guns throughout much of the building, but with little hope the decision actually settled the question.
The Michigan State Capitol Commission voted 6-0 to adopt the new policy following the armed assault on the U.S. Capitol last week and people with guns swarming the state Capitol last April.
Under the new policy, only law enforcement and people with valid concealed pistol licenses may carry a gun into the Capitol. The commission opted against a stricter prohibition, arguing its power to adopt a full ban appears sketchy and it has no budget to take actions such as installing metal detectors at public entrances.
Democrats say it doesn t go far enough. Republicans say it goes too far. After armed protests in Lansing and a violent riot in D.C., Michigan s Capitol bans open carry, joining a majority of states.
