Blue chip freight company Mainfreight also helped give the index a boost, gaining 1 per cent to $84.00, continuing its strong run. Fellow freight company Freightways was up 0.08 per cent at $12.67. Freightways has also been a strong performer, its shares gaining 21 per cent in the five months to the end of July. Contact Energy, whose shares rose 22 per cent over that period, was up 0.4 per cent on Wednesday at $8.41. NZ Refining, which rose 82 per cent in that time, jumped 4.8 per cent to 86c.

The New Zealand sharemarket gave up early gains on Tuesday. “There’s quite a wide divergence of views within the analyst community of where the valuation sits. But as we’ve seen the re-emergence of Covid-19 with the Delta variant, I think more investors have been comfortable owning the stock.” Genesis Energy ended the day down 0.1 per cent at $3.37. The power generator and retailer fell 1.6 per cent to $3.37 after it announced to the NZX that an arbitrator had ruled against the company in a dispute with Australian gas supplier Beach Energy. Genesis will need to pay $53 million to meet the carbon liability on the gas contract.
