People are being asked how they want to use GWR Park in Faringdon Road and how it should be developed and preserved in an online survey launched by Swindon Borough Council. One of the closest green spaces to the town centre, the park was bought by Great Western Railway as a cricket pitch for its workers and is the oldest public park in Swindon. Cabinet member for regeneration of culture, heritage and leisure Dale Heenan said: The GWR Park on Faringdon Road has played an active role in the town centre s social and leisure life for over 170 years.

A COMPETITION has launched inviting photographers to take top snaps of Swindon s architecture. Visit Swindon hopes amateur snappers are inspired to search the town for unusual and interesting buildings then share photos of them online. This new challenge follows the success of the organisation s Hidden Gems 2020 competition which had more than 400 entries. One lucky photographer will win a £300 prize bundle sponsored by businesses in Swindon s Old Tow which includes £50 vouchers to spend in Food Magpie, Magnum Wine Shop, contemporary art and furniture gallery Oink, lifestyle store Kapada Vintage, Willoby’s Furniture, and the Wood Street Food Hall, along with a Sunday roast for two at The Bank restaurant in Wood Street.

TALL buildings in the town centre might not be allowed if they affect the appearance or view of the historic Railway Conservation Area. And the pedestrian underpass between the town centre and the old railway works should be improved as a priority, according to a new plan for the area. Swindon Borough Council has approved a new management plan for conserving and improving the heritage area which includes both the Railway Village south of the tracks and the old Great Western Railway works on the other side. The management plan says the works are crucial to the town’s history and to its future.
