LE MARS The Le Mars American Legion Auxiliary Post #241 sponsors the annual Poppy Poster Contest each year in remembrance of veterans and the symbolic poppy.
Sixth grade students at Gehlen Catholic School participate in the contest as part of their art curriculum under the direction of instructor Beth Schlichte.
Poppy Week is usually observed as the week that ends on the Saturday before Memorial Day. However, Gehlen Catholic 6th grade students learned about it earlier in the year as part of a unit on good poster design. In art class, they created posters to enter into the auxiliarys annual Poppy Poster Contest.
