Appeals court rejects lawsuit over Georgia absentee ballot signatures

Dekalb election workers sort presidential ballots in Stonecrest Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020. (Steve Schaefer/Atlanta Journal-Constitution/TNS) Appeals court rejects lawsuit over Georgia absentee ballot signatures ATLANTA The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has denied a Republican Party effort to reject more absentee ballots in Georgia’s U.S. Senate runoffs by changing how election officials check absentee ballot signatures. A three-judge panel ruled unanimously Sunday against the lawsuit brought by the political campaigns of Republican U.S. Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, as well as the Georgia Republican Party and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. It’s the latest in a series of court decisions rebuffing challenges to Georgia’s election rules and procedures following President Donald Trump’s 12,000-vote loss to Joe Biden. Loeffler and Perdue face Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively, in runoffs Jan. 5.

Appeals Court Rejects Lawsuit Seeking Stronger Signature Matching in Georgia Senate Runoffs

Appeals Court Rejects Lawsuit Seeking Stronger Signature Matching in Georgia Runoffs An appeals court on Sunday rejected a lawsuit from Republicans that sought stronger, more consistent signature matching in the ongoing U.S. Senate runoff elections. The Georgia Republican Party, joined by Sens. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.), had sued Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, alleging the signature matching for mail-in ballots was “unconstitutional, arbitrary, and inconsistent.” A district court found the plaintiffs lacked standing, prompting an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. A three-judge panel ruled Sunday the plaintiffs did not sufficiently allege an injury that can be addressed to establish standing.

Confederate monument outside Mississippi courthouse to remain after tie vote on moving it

Confederate monument outside Mississippi courthouse to remain after tie vote on moving it Associated Press, Mississippi Clarion Ledger The Confederate Reckoning: Why monuments and symbols are being removed Replay Video UP NEXT GULFPORT  A Confederate monument will remain outside a Mississippi courthouse after a majority-white board of supervisors deadlocked on a proposal to move it. News outlets report that two supervisors in coastal Harrison County voted Monday to move the soldier statue, and two voted against moving it. The board has five members, so at least three votes were needed to approve the change. One supervisor was absent. The public display of Confederate symbols has come under widespread debate in recent years, and that has intensified since late May, when video showed a white Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the neck of a Black man named George Floyd, who died.
