Laurent A. Voivenel, Senior Vice President, Operations and Development for the Middle East, Africa and India, Swiss-Belhotel International, spoke today at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) on the critical need to reduce the carbon footprint across the industry. Participating in a panel discussion at the ‘ATM Inspiration Theatre’, Laurent emphasized on the importance of achieving energy efficiency using renewable resources. According to a report by United Nations World Tourism Organization UNWTO, the hotel industry accounts for 1% of global annual carbon emissions while tourism as a whole accounts for 8% carbon emissions and this is set to increase as the demand continues to grow. Therefore, the hotel industry must reduce its carbon emissions by 66% by 2030 and 90% by 2050 to stay within the 2˚C threshold agreed at COP21.
