Marchers call for reparations for the 1917 massacre of Black people in East St Louis

EAST ST. LOUIS — It s the day before the Fourth of July, and Matt Hawkins says he should be celebrating on this hot, clear Saturday. Instead, the long-time East St. Louis activist is at City Hall, marching to remember those killed more than 100 years ago in the 1917 East St. Louis massacre and calling for reparations for those still living in the city. Nobody s trying to get anything extra. I believe reparations are about healing, Hawkins said. I m not angry. I m just saying, my God, how can we do this? We want peace. We want partnership. We just don t have the money.

Cardinals Release Tyler Heineman

MLB Trade Rumors The Cardinals announced they’ve released catcher  Tyler Heineman from the minor league deal he signed over the winter. (St. Louis also confirmed their previously-reported agreement with left-hander T.J. McFarland). Heineman’s contract allowed him to elect free agency if a major league opportunity opened up elsewhere, notes Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat (Twitter link). It’s not yet clear if that was the impetus for his release. Heineman only picked up 77 plate appearances with Triple-A Memphis this season, hitting .254/.325/.313 without any home runs. The 30-year-old has typically been more productive at the minors’ highest level, evidenced by his career .284/.351/.422 line over parts of six Triple-A seasons.

St Clair County Boosts Cybersecurity, But Questions Remain Over Alleged Ransom Hack

St. Clair County Courthouse in downtown Belleville, Illinois. Roughly a month after St. Clair County was allegedly targeted by a ransomware cyberattack, the county is moving to bolster its network’s defenses. But questions still remain on the specifics of the attack. The county board voted unanimously Monday night to approve a new policy hoped to minimize security risks from future attacks. The new policy adds multi-factor authentication on county accounts and raises requirements on county network passwords. But the county has yet to comment on the specifics of the attack, outside of confirming that it happened and that the severity of the attack was being investigated by the county and law enforcement.
