Assumption Parish man indicted in fatal shooting
A 19-year-old Assumption Parish man has been indicted in connection with a shooting that killed one person and injured two others in September.
A grand jury last week found enough evidence to charge Shontun Joseph, of Freetown Lane in Belle Rose, with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated criminal property damage, aggravated assault with a firearm, illegal use of a gun and aggravated second-degree battery.
An indictment does not presume guilt or innocence but indicates the grand jury found prosecutors presented enough evidence to warrant a trial on the charges.
Joseph is accused of firing the shots that claimed the life of 21-year-old Baton Rouge resident Cameron Brooks. The Sept. 24 shooting also injured an 11-year-old child and 51-year-old man who were struck by gunfire while inside a home near the 100 block of Freetown Lane in Belle Rose, police said.
Court overturns Assumption shooter’s drug and weapons convictions
A court has overturned drug and weapons convictions for a Belle Rose man convicted in a shooting that left one man dead and another critically injured three years ago.
An Assumption Parish jury found Kirby Thomas, 42, guilty in 2018 of attempted manslaughter, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance.
After a judge sentenced Thomas to 20 years in prison on the attempted manslaughter charge, 10 years on the weapons charge and five years on the drug charge, Thomas appealed to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal in Baton Rouge. Thomas argued there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him of attempted manslaughter because he acted in self-defense.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) have released the identity of a man who died after being shot in the 1100 block of North 40th Street on the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Police say officers found Trenton Jones, 26, of Belle Rose suffering from an apparent gunshot wound around 7:45 a.m. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

BATON ROUGE - On Wednesday morning, an individual who d been shot was found dead in north Baton Rouge, police say.
Officials say when they were called to a residence within the 1100 block of N. 40th Street around 8 a.m., they discovered the body of a deceased individual who appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds.
Police identified the victim Wednesday as Ronald Jones, 26, of Belle Rose.
Detectives with the Baton Rouge Police Department are investigating the deadly shooting. No other details were immediately available.
