Cabrera loses bid for new trial in teen s murder
HOLLAND Holland man Juan Sandro Cabrera has lost an appeal for a new trial for the gang-related murder of 14-year-old Troy T.J. Wells.
Cabrera, 20, who is serving a life sentence at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility after being convicted of Wells murder in 2019, filed a motion last year with the 20th Circuit Court for a new trial, arguing his lawyer during the trial did not provide effective representation. In late May, a judge denied the motion.
An Ottawa County jury determined Cabrera shot and killed Wells in the hallway of the Hampton Inn hotel in Holland Township just after midnight on Feb. 16, 2019.
