Belize Hotel Association President Supports Tourism Plan

The Tourism Recovery Plan that the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) officially introduced last month has received overall endorsement from the newly-installed President of the Belize Hotel Association (BHA).
In newspaper op-ed this week, Saldivar said that “It is reassuring to see a focus on assistance to small stakeholders. Foreign investment is absolutely welcomed and helps tremendously in creating a beautifully diversified portfolio for our destination, but I was pleased to see specific appreciation for the smaller stakeholders in the plan as well because those are the ones that deliver that unbelizeable character to the Belize experience that wows our visitors and encourages so many return guests,” BHA President Alina Saldivar shared, expressing the need for the financial incentive programs and affordable tourism loans to be put in place quickly in order to enable Belizeans to afford to invest in tourism.

Belize Hotel Association Holds its Annual General Meeting
The Belize Hotel Association hosted its annual general meeting today at the Biltmore Plaza in Belize City. The AGM served as an opportunity to meet face-to-face after a long time apart, and to share issues of concern to the six hundred hoteliers and property owners who form the BHA membership. Today’s meeting addressed the COVID-19 pandemic and explored how to re-energise the industry. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Pre-COVID, tourism contributed over forty-five percent of Belize’s G.D.P. and was one of the main industries shattered by the pandemic. The IMF, however, reported that Belize was the eighth most affected country. Outgoing Belize Hotel Association President, Ted Tejada says that it is time for the industry to reset, rebound and re-energise.

At the AGM today, Ted Tejada stepped down as president of the Belize Hotel Association; he had been at the helm of the association for the past five years. So we asked him about his experience and accomplishments in that role, while still carrying out his duties as the general manager at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza.

Today, the Belize Tourism Board officially launched its 2021 Belizean Traveller Campaign to promote domestic travel across the country. Over the past year, local travelling has been the lifeblood of the tourism industry shattered by the pandemic in early 2020. The Belize Tourism Board has teamed up with the Belize Hotel Association for the 2021 Belizean Traveller Campaign, but this time around, the influencers include media and TV personalities, a social media sensation and a well-known chef. While the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the tourism industry, it also highlighted the need to strengthen domestic travel.
