Criminal Investigation into Misappropriation of Unemployment Relief Funds
A criminal investigation is underway by the Belize Police Department to determine whether anyone is legally responsible for the misappropriation of public funds from the Labor Department. Those monies were disbursed via deposits into the accounts of workers who had lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, but many of those who qualified for government assistance did not receive the biweekly cash deposits and top-ups. That financial aid was administered through the Unemployment Relief Program. A subsequent review carried out by the Audit Department reveals that the monies were embezzled through various means by employees of the Labor Department who were entrusted with carrying out the disbursements. Luis Tun
A San Pedro man, Luis Tun, is tonight fighting for his life at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after he was shot multiple times on Saturday night. The incident took place at the Clumsy Restaurant and Bar in the San Mateo area of the island town. Tun was reportedly behind the bar counter when a man dressed in full black entered the bar and fired shots at him. The gunman then ran out of the bar and jumped onto a getaway motorcycle being driven by another person. Tun remains in a critical, but stable condition.

Robberies in Belize City and Toledo
Robberies seem to be on the rise and not just in Belize City as images captured on surveillance video and posted on social media show. Just recently, several persons were charged for the robberies at Belize Healthcare Partners and the Biltmore hotel, and tonight, we report on three other property crimes that occurred by masked men in the city and southern Belize. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Last Thursday, three armed men held up the owners of a grocery store in Elridgeville in Punta Gorda. Surveillance footage of the incident shows the men entering the store and taking money from the cash register, but not before pushing the female shop owner to the ground while the Chinese businessman is held at gunpoint. The one minute forty-two-second video captures the chilling ordeal.
