Feb 9, 2021 Piracy at Sea – Fishermen are Robbed at Gunpoint! There is a spike in piracy at sea. Since mid-January and as recent as this morning, fishers have been the target of armed robbers. The thieves have been taking advantage of their vulnerability and robbing them of their products and their engines. It is a perennial problem that law enforcement agencies have been trying to tackle. Today, News Five found out more.   Duane Moody, Reporting As early as six this morning in the area of South Water Caye in southern Belize, after spending several days on the waters, a group of fishermen returning to the city with their catch was robbed at gunpoint. The thieves took their cell phones, the boat engines, and their fish products. It is the most recent incident of a series of piracy at sea. Dec 22, 2020 Four Missing Dangriga Fishermen; Is Foul Play Suspected? The search for four fishermen reported missing at sea on Friday continues, despite the efforts of the coast guard and police department taking an ominous turn.  Forty-two-year-old Omar Thompson, twenty-nine-year-old Brenton Brackett, nineteen-year-old Leon Joseph and Jeffery Gomez, all residents of Dangriga, remain unaccounted for, following a fishing trip to Southern Long Caye around December eleventh.  Thompson’s common-law wife, Shani Alvarez, reported to police that her last communication with him was last Monday while he was reportedly still on the island.  Since then, she has made several attempts to reach him but her calls and messages have all gone unanswered.  On Saturday, December nineteenth, a formal report was made to Dangriga police; a day after the Belize Coast Guard was notified of their disappearance.  According to Operations Officer, Lieutenant Kenrick Thomas, they have been acti

Dec 21, 2020 Coast Guard Hosts Young Sea Cadets to Christmas Lunch This afternoon at the Gateway Youth Center, the Belize Coast Guard hosted a handful of children who are part of its Sea Cadet Program to lunch.  It is part of the Christmas cheer being spread by the organization, particularly since COVID-19 has disrupted other activities that would have been held at part of its ongoing outreach.  We caught up with Acting Commandant Greg Soberanis who says it’s all about spreading the joy of the season.   Gregory Soberanis, Acting Commandant, Belize Coast Guard “Today we’re having a Christmas lunch for our Sea Cadet Program.  As you know, the Sea Cadet Program is a vital, strategic component of the coast guard strategy.  It’s one way that the organization gives back to the community.  It is through this program, reaching out to kids.  There’s a saying that goes, “If you want to last the summer, grow corn.  If you want to last a decade, grow a forest.�
