Leo Weiner Divertimentos more than diverting

WTJU Mar 9th, 2021 | By Ralph Graves Hungarian composer and teacher Leo Weiner was a contemporary of Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly. Like his colleagues, he used elements of Hungarian folk music in his work. Where he differed was in his style. Weiner’s music is more conservative, and solidly in the Post-Romantic tradition. This volume includes an assortment of orchestral works by Weiner. The “Pastroal, phantaisie et fugue” is the most substantial piece on the album. Weiner composed it before he started exploring folk music. It has an Impressionistic quality to it. Weiner’s use of modes keeps the work’s tonal center from being too strongly defined, giving the work a somewhat dreamy quality even in the fugue.

True Cultural Diplomacy Is Subversive - The Aspen Institute

True Cultural Diplomacy Is Subversive March 4, 2021  • Andrei Tarnea Culture is intrinsic to identity, in both its individual and collective expressions. Culture is indelibly imprinted in all our products and activities. For millennia, culture traveled. Tradesmen and caravans, ships and refugees, migrants and warriors transferred, shared, and shaped the cultures we live today. Culture escapes controls, borders, and legal barriers and it circulates with the constant human flow of a roaming species.  It speaks, translates, and mediates. Diplomacy is inseparable from culture. Goods, practices, and ideas including cultural traditions and habits were used as tools of diplomacy. But, ever stubbornly, culture is not just what governments chose it to be.

ONLINE: DRIFT

ONLINE: DRIFT November 12, 2020 Skye Cooper Trumpet player Dave Cooper leads DRIFT and QUAD, and performs with Isthmus Brass, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Madison Symphony Orchestra. Led by trumpet player Dave Cooper, the DRIFT ensemble was initially gathered to play a set of compositions and arrangements by Cooper, inspired by music from Béla Bartók to Miles Davis. Making up for March and December 2020 DIG Jazz dates postponed by the pandemic, DRIFT reconvenes with some new Cooper compositions and a reconfigured lineup just for this show. Pianist Chris Rottmayer is unable to participate, so tenor sax player Tom Gullion (from Cooper s more improvisation-based group, QUAD) will make up the quartet with returning drummer Matt Endres and bassist Nick Moran. Find the free Madison Music Collective livestream on the Arts + Literature Laboratory Facebook and YouTube pages.
